Colonel Ajay Kothiyal (Retd), the chief ministerial candidate of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in the recent Uttarakhand polls, along with the party’s former state working president Bhupesh Upadhyay, resigned from the party on Wednesday.

Kothiyal explained in his resignation letter to AAP national convenor that he had been a member of the party from 19 April 2021 until 18 May 2022, but he was resigning in consideration of the sentiments of former soldiers, former paramilitary, elders, women, youth, and intellectuals.

Despite several attempts, Kothiyal could not be reached for a comment after AAP failed to win a single seat in the state, with Kothiyal losing from the Gangotri seat.

In his letter to Kejriwal, Upadhyay expressed that “The work culture and thought process of AAP is not in favor of Uttarakhand and the common people of Uttarakhand. This is why people of Uttarakhand rejected the party in Vidhan Sabha elections.”

AAP state president Deepak Bali expressed gratitude to Col Kothiyal for working with the party.
