During her address to Mallikarjun Kharge, Sonia Gandhi expressed that taking on the role was a “huge responsibility” and that she had endeavored to fulfill her duties with sincerity. Speaking at an official ceremony at the AICC headquarters, Sonia conveyed her confidence in Kharge’s ability to inspire and strengthen the party under his leadership. She expressed her satisfaction in having an experienced politician with strong roots as the chosen president, emphasizing his determination and dedication to his work.

Sonia also expressed gratitude for the honor and respect she has received over the years, stating that she would be grateful for it until her last breath. She mentioned that she had attempted to fulfill her responsibilities to the best of her abilities during her time in the respected post and expressed relief at stepping down.

During the ceremony, Kharge was presented with the certificate of election. He described it as an emotional moment, emphasizing the pride he felt as the son of a laborer and a common Congress worker taking over as party chief, and his commitment to carrying forward the legacy of the Congress.

Kharge’s election as president marks the first time in nearly two and a half decades that a non-Gandhi has held the position. He secured the top post after defeating a party MP by a significant margin in the presidential election held last week.
