Electricity distribution companies in Gujarat, like Torrent Power, are alerting customers about fake SMSes and WhatsApp messages regarding electricity disconnection. Both customers and the company’s employees have been targeted by fraudsters and miscreants.

Torrent Power stated, “Recently, there has been a surge in reports of fraudulent SMSes and WhatsApp messages sent to customers nationwide. These messages falsely claim that the customer’s power connection will be cut off at 09:30 or 10:30 PM due to an unpaid bill from the previous month.”

The company advised customers not to respond to these messages or call the numbers provided. They also warned customers that fraudsters may impersonate call center employees and trick them into sharing bank details, OTPs, or downloading malicious software to steal sensitive information.

Torrent Power serves various cities in Gujarat and is taking steps to protect its customers from these scams. Other state electricity distribution companies, like Uttar Gujarat Vij Company Limited, are also cautioning customers against similar fraudulent messages. They emphasized that they would never ask for bank details or OTPs, or request access to customers’ devices during payment transactions.
