On Thursday, India chose to abstain from voting on a resolution presented by Ukraine and its allies at the UN General Assembly. The 193-member Assembly reconvened for the 11th Emergency Special Session and cast their votes on the draft resolution titled ‘Humanitarian consequences of the aggression against Ukraine’. The resolution was passed with 140 votes in favor, 38 abstentions, and five against.

The previous day, India, along with 12 other members of the UN Security Council, also abstained from voting on a resolution put forward by Russia regarding the humanitarian crisis in Ukraine. The UNSC resolution did not receive enough votes to pass, with only Russia and China in favor.

India had previously abstained twice in the Security Council and once in the General Assembly on resolutions related to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
