India has taken over the rotating presidency of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) for the month of December. This is the second time during its two-year term as an elected member of the Council for 2021-22. Previously, India held the UNSC presidency in August 2021.

During India’s presidency of the UNSC in December, there are two significant ministerial-level events scheduled. On December 14, there will be a discussion on “Reformed Multilateralism,” and on December 15, the topic will be “Counter-Terrorism.” These events will be chaired by External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar.

The open debate on December 14 will focus on “Maintenance of International Peace and Security: New Orientation for Reformed Multilateralism” at the Security Council. The goal of this discussion is to promote reforms in the current multilateral system to make it more inclusive and effective, with the UN at the core.

The second event planned is a high-level briefing on December 15 regarding “Threats to International Peace and Security Caused by Terrorist Acts: Global Approach to Counter Terrorism — Challenges and Way Forward.” This briefing aims to emphasize the need for coordinated efforts to combat terrorism, considering the recent increase in terrorist activities globally.

Overall, during its eighth term as an elected member of the UNSC, India has worked to represent the key concerns of the Global South.
