Arindam Bagchi, a 1995-batch Indian Foreign Service (IFS) official, has been appointed as India’s permanent representative to the United Nations (UN) and other international organizations in Geneva, replacing Indra Mani Pandey. Bagchi, who took over as spokesperson of the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) in March 2020, has effectively managed critical issues such as the eastern Ladakh border dispute and India’s response during New Delhi’s G20 presidency.

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) announced Bagchi’s appointment, stating that he is expected to assume his new role soon. Additionally, it is reported that several senior diplomats, including joint secretary (G20) Nagaraj Naidu Kakanur and high commissioner to Mauritius K Nandini Singla, are being considered for the position of MEA spokesperson.

Prior to this appointment, Bagchi served as India’s ambassador to Croatia and as deputy high commissioner to Sri Lanka. He also held positions in the Prime Minister’s Office as a director and at India’s permanent mission to the UN in New York.
