Assam Chief Minister and NEDA convener Himanta Biswa Sarma arrived in Imphal for a day-long visit on Saturday. During his visit, Sarma is expected to meet with Chief Minister Biren Singh, MLAs, and representatives of civil society organizations. This is his first visit to the state since the violence broke out in the northeastern state on May 3 and comes around two weeks after Union Home Minister’s four-day visit. Despite being well over a month since the violence first broke, the state continues to be gripped by conflict, with three people being killed early Friday morning. The death toll is now over 104, including multiple security personnel. During his visit, Union Home Minister Amit Shah announced a CBI probe to investigate six FIRs, five on alleged criminal conspiracy and one on general conspiracy behind the violence in Manipur. Acting on a reference from the state routed through the Centre, the probe agency has also re-registered the six FIRs.
