The government of Himachal Pradesh will serve as a guardian to orphans in the state as part of social welfare initiatives. The newly elected Congress government aims to offer financial aid to orphans for education and other needs. To support this, a fund called Mukhya Mantri Sukhashraya Sahayata Kosh has been established with a total of Rs 101 crore, contributed by all MLAs with Rs 1 lakh each.

After taking the oath, the Chief Minister Sukhu immediately visited an orphanage to kick off the program. He emphasized the government’s duty to care for orphans and expressed the commitment to provide them with financial support and help them live dignified lives, including participating in celebrations and pursuing higher education. The state has identified 6,000 orphans to benefit from the scheme, receiving Rs 5,000 for summer and winter clothing, as well as Rs 500 for festivals.

Orphans will be allowed to take a 10-day vacation within the state, with the government covering train tickets and accommodation in a 3-star hotel. Upon reaching adulthood, they will receive a monthly allowance of Rs 4,000 for college expenses. Additionally, the government will pay hostel fees for beneficiaries studying in ITI and other government institutions.

Leading by example, the Chief Minister has personally contributed to the fund by taking a pay cut. He stressed the importance of direct financial assistance to orphans to ensure they can pursue education and live peacefully. PhD students will also receive the allowance, along with a fixed amount for marriage expenses, continuing until the age of 27.

Managing finances for social welfare programs will be a key challenge for the government. Approximately Rs 900 crore will be allocated in the first year for the Old Pension Scheme, while a sub-committee will assess the feasibility of providing Rs 1,500 to women aged 18-60.
