Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma stated on Friday that the draft delimitation proposal recently released by the Election Commission of India, if implemented, would achieve what the 1985 Assam Accord and the National Register of Citizens could not. He also mentioned that it would help in “protecting the interests of the people of Assam.”

Sarma emphasized the need to prioritize creating a conducive environment for studying in Assam. He expressed concern that without this, seats in medical and engineering colleges in the state would be dominated by students benefiting from coaching provided by the Ajmal Foundation, run by AIUDF chief. Sarma also addressed the issue of competitive exam performance by these students.

Addressing a public meeting, Sarma expressed the importance of creating an environment for education in Assam, regardless of tribal, non-tribal, indigenous Hindus, or Muslims. He urged people to bring their issues to him and emphasized the need for movement focused on education in Assam.

Sarma’s public meetings on Friday were part of the campaign for next year’s Lok Sabha elections. He also highlighted the draft proposal for delimitation of the Lok Sabha and Assembly constituencies in Assam, published by the ECI on Tuesday.

Sarma also emphasized the importance of protecting the community, land, and foundation of Assam to prevent unfamiliar people from taking over the state and to retain political power for the people of Assam.

During his address, Sarma introduced new welfare schemes, including free medical treatment up to Rs 5 lakh annually for ration card holders, funds for promoting entrepreneurship among youth, and financial support for women connected to self-help groups to start their own enterprises.
