The Centre has extended Amit Khare’s term as Adviser to the Prime Minister beyond October 12, 2023, to align with the Prime Minister’s term. Khare, a retired IAS officer, was appointed on a contract basis for two years starting October 12, 2021.

According to an order from the Department of Personnel and Training, the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved the extension of Amit Khare’s tenure as Adviser to the Prime Minister, in the rank and scale of Secretary to the Government of India on a contract basis. This extension is subject to the usual terms and conditions applicable to re-employed officers of Secretary level in the Government of India, and will continue until the end of the Prime Minister’s term or until further orders, whichever is earlier.

Amit Khare, a 1985-batch Jharkhand-cadre IAS officer, retired as the higher education secretary and played a key role in shaping the new National Education Policy (NEP). He holds an MBA from IIM and took charge as the higher education secretary in December 2019, having also served as the IB ministry secretary.
