India is eager to enhance its partnership with Russia on Arctic issues, with significant potential for collaboration in the energy sector, Prime Minister Narendra Modi stated on Wednesday.

During an online plenary session at the Eastern Economic Forum in Vladivostok, also attended by Russian President, Modi highlighted India’s focus on diplomacy and dialogue to resolve conflicts from the outset.

Reflecting on his physical participation at the forum summit in 2019, Modi mentioned the introduction of India’s “Act Far-East” policy, leading to increased cooperation with the Russian Far East across various areas.

“This policy has now become a fundamental aspect of the ‘Special and Privileged Strategic Partnership’ between India and Russia,” he added.

This month marks the 30th anniversary of the establishment of the Consulate of India in Vladivostok, with India being the first country to open a consulate in the city. Modi acknowledged the city’s role in various milestones in the bilateral relationship.

“I commend Putin for his vision in establishing this forum,” the prime minister remarked, emphasizing the importance of connectivity in India’s relations with the region.

“In addition to energy, India has made substantial investments in the Russian Far East in pharmaceuticals and diamonds,” he noted.

Modi further highlighted how global events have a ripple effect across the world, citing the impact of the Ukraine conflict and the Covid pandemic on global supply chains, particularly concerning shortages of foodgrain, fertilizer, and fuel in developing countries.
