In India, there has been a resurgence of Covid-19 cases, with over 18,000 cases reported after 130 days, bringing the total number of cases to 4,34,52,164, according to data from the Union Health Ministry on Thursday. This marks a 78% increase in cases from two weeks ago, and a 119% increase in deaths.

Active cases in the country crossed the one-lakh mark on Thursday after 122 days, with 18,819 new cases reported in 24 hours and the death toll reaching 5,25,116 with 39 new fatalities. The active cases now stand at 1,04,555, comprising 0.24% of the total infections, and the recovery rate is at 98.55%.

The active caseload increased by 4,953 cases in 24 hours, with a daily positivity rate of 4.16% and a weekly positivity rate of 3.72%, as reported by the ministry.

According to the Health Ministry, there are 43 districts in the country with a weekly positivity rate of 10% or more, with Kerala having the highest number of such districts at 11, followed by Mizoram with 6 and Maharashtra with 5.

The states witnessing a noticeable rise in cases include Jammu and Kashmir, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Bihar, West Bengal, Gujarat, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha, Manipur, Mizoram, Karnataka, and Puducherry. There are 42 districts in India with a positivity rate between 5 and 10%, while 627 others are below the 5% mark.

The country has seen a steady increase in cases this month, crossing the 4,000-mark on June 3, 7,000-mark on June 9, 8,000-mark on June 11, 12,000-mark on June 16, 13,000-mark on June 18, 17,000-mark on June 24, and 18,000-mark on June 30.

As for deaths, the 39 new fatalities recorded on Thursday include 17 from Kerala, 7 from Maharashtra, 4 from Uttar Pradesh, 3 from Punjab, 2 each from Haryana, Karnataka, and West Bengal, and 1 each from and Sikkim. The total death toll stands at 5,25,116, with Maharashtra, Kerala, and Karnataka reporting the highest numbers.

The Health Ministry emphasized that more than 70% of the deaths occurred due to comorbidities.

Since the beginning of the pandemic, at least 1 in 31 residents have been infected with Covid-19 in India, with an average of 15,315 new cases reported per day in the last week, marking a 78% increase from two weeks ago.
